Equality California Congratulates California Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez on Election as National Speakers Conference President
(Sacramento) Equality California congratulates California Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez on his election to President of the National Speakers Conference. The National Speakers Conference is an annual meeting of the State Legislative Leaders Foundation, and Pérez will host the 2013 meeting in Los Angeles.
"Equality California is thrilled that the hard work and visionary leadership of Speaker John A. Pérez, the first openly gay Assembly Speaker in the country, has been recognized at the highest professional level," said Clarissa Filgioun and Cary Davidson, Presidents of Equality California and Equality California Institute. "We could not be happier that this longtime advocate for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people has been elected to a position of national prominence and influence, attesting to the increased acceptance and value placed on LGBT voices."
Equality California has repeatedly endorsed Speaker Pérez's candidacies, and has endorsed him again for 2012. Speaker Pérez successfully authored and passed AB 1003 (2009), a bill providing state funding for LGBT-specific domestic violence programs, and AB 673 with Assembly Member Ricardo Lara, integrating health issues affecting the LGBT community into the mission of the State Office of Multicultural Health. He is also a dedicated HIV/AIDS activist, authoring many pieces of legislation in this area, and has been honored for his service by three Los Angeles Mayors, the Los Angeles Times, and the California Labor Association.
