Equality California seeks Palm Springs Good Neighbor Awards Nominees
(Palm Springs) This year, Equality California has partnered with State Farm Insurance to recognize the first Good Neighbor Awards at EQCA's annual Equality Awards. Following successful galas in San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego, EQCA now seeks nominees from the community in order to recognize "good neighbors" who do the important day-to-day work of building a state of equality.
Equality California is the largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender advocacy non-profit.
“Good Neighbors” already recognized this year include Dr. Royce Lin of San Francisco, for his work providing high-quality health care to LGBT people, particularly low-income transgender women and people living with HIV/AIDS; Sanie Andres of Antelope Valley, recognized at the Los Angeles Equality Awards for his work with the OUTreach Center, the only lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community center in the Antelope Valley; and Dr. Joel Trambly of San Diego, recognized for his broad activism, including serving as a representative to the City of San Diego Human Relations Commission.
This year marks the first time that an Equality Award honoree will be selected not by EQCA, but from nominations by grassroots community members. The honoree will be presented with a “State Farm Good Neighbor Equality Award” on stage at the 2012 Palm Springs Equality Awards taking place at the Riviera Resort and Spa, in Palm Springs, on Saturday, October 13, 2012.
“While elected officials and movement leaders play a critical role in our efforts to achieve equality, we also know that there are countless individuals across our state making significant contributions to our movement who deserve our thanks, appreciation and recognition,” said Equality California Board President Clarissa Filgioun. “We are proud to engage the LGBT community and our allies in applauding these unsung heroes and thank State Farm Insurance for partnering with us in the important celebration of this work.”
Senator Barbara Boxer will be honored with this year's Leadership Award, and multiple-award winning actress and singer Freda Payne, best known for her mega-hit “Band of Gold”, will provide entertainment.
Nominations for the Palm Springs Good Neighbor Award may be submitted at http://eqcaawards.org/palm-springs/palm-springs-good-neighbor-awards. Submissions must be received no later than Friday, September 28.
As an added incentive to encourage nominations, EQCA will award a pair of complimentary tickets to the Palm Springs Equality Awards ($300 value) to the individual whose nominee is selected for the award.*
The 2012 Equality Awards are made possible in part by Statewide Presenting Sponsor AT&T, Statewide Reception Sponsor State Farm Insurance, Official Airline Sponsor Southwest Airlines and Statewide Sponsors Voli Vodka and Bank of America.

Equality California has partnered with legislators to successfully sponsor more than 85 pieces of pro-equality legislation. EQCA continues to advance equality through legislative advocacy, electoral work, public education and community empowerment. www.eqca.org
