Equality California to Honor Assemblymember Susan Eggman, Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center Executive Director Shara Murphy, and Dr. Neil Flynn
(Sacramento) Equality California today announced honorees planned for its 2013 Sacramento Equality Awards, scheduled for Monday, March 11. EQCA will honor Assemblymember Susan Talamantes Eggman with the 2013 Leadership Award, and Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center Executive Director Shara Murphy with the 2013 Community Service award. For his work with the HIV/AIDS community, Dr. Neil Flynn of the Center for AIDS Research, Education and Services and UC Davis, will receive the State Farm Good Neighbor Award.
Assemblymember Eggman, a proudly lesbian representative of the 13th District, was one of the founders of the Central Valley Stonewall Democrats, and taught classes on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender diversity at California State University Sacramento.
Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center Executive Director Shara Murphy previously worked for Speaker of the Assembly John A. Pérez, handling member services for his district, and was instrumental in the campaign run by Assemblymember Richard Pan to defeat Andy Pugno, the author of Proposition 8.
Dr. Neil Flynn works at CARES, a Sacramento clinic that provides testing, medical services and counseling, where he provides healthcare for HIV/AIDS patients; he also runs an HIV/AIDS clinic in South Africa, and a mobile HIV awareness and harm reduction clinic in Oak Park out of a converted RV.
“Susan, Shara and Neil represent both the achievements of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community, and the deep commitment that makes our work possible,” said John O’Connor, Equality California executive director. “We’re thrilled to honor them for their work in building a state of equality.”
Each year, Equality California recognizes individuals and organizations who have made an impact on the movement to secure full and lasting equality for LGBT people at its annual Equality Awards — a series of formal galas and cocktail events held in San Francisco, San Diego, Palm Springs, Los Angeles and Sacramento. Past honorees have included Adam Lambert, Dolores Huerta, Arianna Huffington, Attorney General Kamala Harris and California Governor Jerry Brown.
