CA Attorney General Kamala Harris to Receive EQCA Vanguard in Leadership Award
(Los Angeles) Equality California today announced that California Attorney General Kamala Harris will be honored with the Vanguard in Leadership Award at the Los Angeles Equality Awards, taking place on October 5 at the JW Marriott at LA Live.
“Attorney General Harris has long championed full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Californians, and thanks in part to her refusal to defend Prop. 8, the freedom to marry has returned to California!” said Equality California Executive Director John O’Connor. “From her opposition to Prop. 22, to her outspoken support of hate crime legislation protecting LGBT people, Harris has always been at the vanguard of leadership.”
Harris rose to prominence as a prosecutor in San Francisco, where she pioneered a program, “Back on Track,” that tackled recidivism and was used as a model for the state under legislation signed by Gov. Schwarzenegger. In San Francisco, she created a Hate Crimes Unit, and convened a national conference to rebut the “gay-transgender panic defense.” In 2010, she announced that she would not defend Prop. 8 from a federal challenge, believing the law to be unconstitutional. This ultimately led to the Supreme Court dismissing the Prop. 8 appellants for lack of standing.
The Los Angeles Equality Awards will take place on Saturday, October 5, at the JW Marriott located at LA Live. The Awards will also honor LA Galaxy Soccer Player Robbie Rogers with the Leadership Award, Sen. Ted Lieu with the Ally Leadership Award, and Planned Parenthood’s Sue Dunlap with the State Farm Good Neighbor Award.
The 2013 Equality Awards are presented by AT&T and sponsored by State Farm Insurance and Southwest Airlines. For more information about the Equality Awards, visit www.eqcaawards.org/los-angeles.
