Equality California congratulates Sen. Kevin de León on his unanimous, bipartisan election to serve as the next president pro tem of the California Senate, succeeding Sen. Darrell Steinberg. Since his election to the Assembly in 2006, Sen. de León has received a 100-percent pro-equality rating from EQCA every year.
“We are thrilled to see the California Senate continuing a tradition of 100-percent pro-equality leadership. Sen. de León is a true champion of full equality for LGBT people, and we look forward to working with him to advance fairness and full equality for all California’s communities,” said Rick Zbur, EQCA executive director-elect. “We thank Sen. Steinberg for his service — this is one great equality ally succeeding another.”
In addition to his 100-percent pro-equality record, Sen. de León authored 2009's AB 103, which ensured surviving partners of same-sex couples could keep shared houses without unfair property taxes.
De León will officially take office as president pro tem in October, when Steinberg’s term ends.
