Equality California Staffs Up for Success in 2013 With Three New Full Time Hires
(Los Angeles) Equality California has expanded its organizational capacity with three significant new staff hires in 2013. The hires come as part of new Executive Director John O’Connor’s goal to extend the capability of the organization by building a core team of dedicated, fulltime staff. The three hires are Jack Lorenz, deputy director of programs and development; Steve Mele, finance director; and Jo Michael, legislative associate.
“I’m proud to formally welcome Jack, Jo and Steve to EQCA’s full time staff,” said John O’Connor, executive director of EQCA. “We’ve got a big year ahead of us, and each of them brings proven expertise to their role, and a deep commitment to full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Californians.”
Jack Lorenz, who had worked with EQCA as a programs and development consultant for the last year, oversees all of EQCA’s programmatic work — education, advocacy and outreach — as well as development, including fundraising, special events and sponsorship. Prior to EQCA, Lorenz worked for 13 years as the executive director of the Gatekeeper Foundation, advocating for the rights of immigrants and other vulnerable populations. Lorenz will be based out of EQCA’s Los Angeles office.
Steve Mele, as finance director, now coordinates the finances of EQCA, Equality California Institute and Equality California PAC, as well as setting policy regarding financial matters and ensuring compliance with local, state and federal laws. Mele has been involved in non-profit and political accounting for over 15 years, and has served as both a consultant and board member to EQCA at different times during his 12-year tenure with EQCA. In 2008, as the owner of ML Associates, an accounting firm specializing in non-profits and political campaigns, Mele was the treasurer for three of the No on Prop. 8 campaign committees. Mele has returned to EQCA from Las Vegas, and will be based out of the organization’s Los Angeles office.
Jo Michael started his work with EQCA as a Legislative Fellow in 2012, and is now working as a legislative associate, meeting full time with legislators and helping craft EQCA’s legislative agenda. A proud trans man, Michael previously worked as a field organizer for the No on 8 campaign, and has worked at the Family Equality Council and ONE Archives. He will be based in Sacramento, giving EQCA a full-time presence in the state capitol.
