EQCA Statement on Referendum Language Filed to Overturn AB1266

(Los Angeles) On August 16, conservative, anti-LGBT organizations initiated the process to introduce a ballot initiative aimed at overturning the School Success and Opportunity Act (AB1266), authored by Assemblymember Tom Ammiano, which was recently signed into law by California Governor Jerry Brown. The bill ensures that transgender youth have the opportunity to fully participate and succeed in schools across the state.

The following is a statement from Equality California's executive director John O'Connor:

"This is a predictable move by fringe groups that oppose all pro-equality measures and that historically have lacked the capacity to successfully execute similar efforts. AB1266 is an historic civil rights bill ensuring all students have the opportunity to participate and succeed in schools, including transgender students. EQCA and our partners will remain vigilant about monitoring the situation."

Equality California (EQCA) is the largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender advocacy organization in California. Over the past decade, Equality California has strategically moved California from a state with extremely limited legal protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people to a state with some of the most comprehensive protections in the nation. Equality California has partnered with legislators to successfully sponsor more than 90 pieces of pro-equality legislation. EQCA continues to advance equality through legislative advocacy, electoral work, public education and community empowerment. www.EQCA.org
