Equality California Endorses Alex Padilla, Glenn Miller and Miguel Santiago

(Sacramento) Equality California is proud to announce its endorsement of Sen. Alex Padilla for Secretary of State, Glenn Miller for the 28th Senate District, and Miguel Santiago for Assembly District 53. They join a group of more than 40 other candidates already endorsed by Equality California in the 2014 election cycle.

Padilla currently represents Senate District 20, covering much of the San Fernando Valley. A longtime ally to the LGBT community, Padilla has worked throughout his career in public service to further equality. This includes helping to establish an LGBT Caucus within the California League of Cities while he was the league president, being an active supporter of Project 10 — a group that works to create safer schools for LGBT students — and campaigning in his district to defeat Proposition 8.

"Alex Padilla has been a lifelong advocate for fairness, equality and a level playing field for all," said John O'Connor, EQCA executive director. "Whether standing up for the rights of LGBT Californians or fighting to protect voting rights for all, Sen. Padilla is someone who our community — and the entire state — can count on to make the right decisions. Equality California is very pleased to endorse Alex Padilla for Secretary of State."

Glenn Miller currently serves as a city councilmember in Indio, and is the first Republican ever endorsed by EQCA. Miller has supported numerous LGBT candidates, and has worked to cultivate a personal relationship with the local LGBT community.

“Full equality for LGBT Californians isn’t a partisan issue, it’s a human rights issue,” said O'Connor. “We’re proud to endorse Glenn Miller and look forward to increased bipartisan support for full equality.”

Miguel Santiago has served on the Los Angeles Community College Board since 2008 and has worked as District Director for Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez, whom EQCA has endorsed for Controller. While on the LACCB, Santiago has supported gender-neutral bathrooms, anti-bullying policies and full inclusion of LGBT students in LACC policy. Santiago is running for Pérez’s seat, as Pérez is termed out.

“Miguel Santiago is an exciting, up-and-coming candidate who is a great choice to carry on the tradition of leadership Speaker Pérez brought to AD 53,” said O'Connor. “We believe that Santiago’s history of supporting the LGBT community portends a great future.”

The Equality California Political Action Committee endorses viable candidates running for statewide offices and the state legislature who have a proven track record of supporting equal rights and legal protections for LGBT Californians and who are committed to advancing these goals in their capacity as elected officials.

Equality California (EQCA) is the largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender advocacy organization in California. For more than a decade, Equality California has strategically moved California from a state with extremely limited legal protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people to a state with some of the most comprehensive human rights protections in the nation. Equality California has partnered with legislators to successfully sponsor 96 pieces of pro-equality legislation. EQCA continues to advance equality through legislative advocacy, electoral work, public education and community empowerment. www.eqca.org
