Building a State of Equality
Equality California is California’s premier statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender civil rights organization focused on creating a fair and just society. Our mission is to achieve and maintain full and lasting equality, acceptance and social justice for all people in our diverse LGBT communities, inside and outside of California. Our mission includes advancing the health and well-being of LGBT Californians through direct healthcare service advocacy and education. Through electoral, advocacy, education and mobilization programs, we strive to create a broad and diverse alliance of LGBT people, educators, government officials, communities of color and faith, labor, business, and social justice communities to achieve our goals
Improving the Lives of LGBT Californians
Equality California works to achieve equality and secure legal protections for LGBT people. To improve the lives of LGBT Californians, Equality California sponsors legislation and coordinates efforts to ensure its passage, lobbies legislators and other policy makers, builds coalitions, develops community strength and empowers individuals and other organizations to engage in the political process.
Creating a Strong California
In the past decade, Equality California has successfully passed more than 90 pieces of civil rights legislation for the LGBT community – more than any other statewide LGBT organization in the nation.
Working in partnership with California’s LGBT Legislative Caucus, Equality California is committed to building a better future for all Californians by protecting youth, strengthening families and empowering communities. Each year at the Capitol, Equality California monitors thousands of bills and leads the state’s efforts to defeat legislation that could have a negative impact on LGBT Californians and their families.
Defending LGBT Rights and Protections
Equality California, on behalf of its members, was an organizational plaintiff in the historic lawsuit asking the California Supreme Court to strike down state law that bars same-gender couples from marriage. In court, Equality California has also successfully defended California’s domestic partnership laws and related state policies that have been implemented in response to Equality California-sponsored legislation.
