Each year, many pieces of legislation that positively affect LGBT Californians and allies are introduced in the California Legislature. EQCA supports these bills in an effort to build a better California.

Senate Bill 1066 would allow any two unmarried, unrelated adults who share a common residence to establish a domestic partnership by filing a declaration with the Secretary of State.

Senate Bill 1250 would expand the Youth Bill of Rights established by SB 518 (Migden) in 2007 to provide incarcerated youth much-needed protections and rights to ensure that they are successful upon release.

Senate Bill 1356 would extend protections currently afforded to sexual assault victims to domestic violence victims by prohibiting the incarceration of domestic violence victim witnesses for contempt when the contempt consists of refusing to testify against the victim's batterer.

Senate Bill 1600 would ensure that charter schools meet the same basic standards that all other public schools must meet regarding comprehensive, bias-free, age-appropriate, and medically-accurate sexual health instruction.

Assembly Bill 20 would provide $145,000 to the California Community Relations Service within the Crime and Violence Prevention Center to develop an effective approach for preventing and responding to intergroup tensions and conflict in areas of the state lacking a human relations infrastructure.

- Assembly Bill 2333 would require all public safety agencies to adopt and promulgate a policy prohibiting officers from using derogatory epithets or treating an individual adversely based on specified protected characteristics.

Assembly Bill 2673 would phase out a provision in the County Employees Retirement Law of 1937. Domestic partners would no longer be treated differently than married spouses for the purpose of receiving county employee death benefits, optional retirement allowances, or survivors' allowances.

- Assembly Bill 2762 would establish a uniform, statewide reporting protocol for all school personnel when made aware that a student has been threatened or harassed.
