LGBT Prisoner Safety Act

Bill Number: AB 382

This bill would add sexual orientation and gender identity to the current list of factors that should be considered in order to safely classify and house prisoners.




Status: Introduced February 23, 2009, passed the Assembly Public Safety Committee with a unanimous 7-0 vote, passed the full Assembly with bipartisan support. Passed Senate Public Safety Committee. Passed Senate on September 3, 2009 by a 23-14 vote. Vetoed by Governor Schwarzenegger.

  • The anti-LGBT right-wing is trying to kill EQCA's bill to repeal the California law that instructs health officials to conduct research into the "causes and cures of homosexuality." Why? Because they know that when people learn that sexual orientation is not a choice and cannot be changed they are much more likely to support full equality.
