Bill Number: SB 416

California collects demographic information such as age, gender, ethnic/racial identity and other information on statewide surveys.
SB 416 would have added voluntary demographic questions on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, domestic partnership status and spouse’s gender to two statewide surveys. 

 

Status: Introduced on February 16, 2011. Passed by the Senate Committee on Governmental Organization on March 22, 2011, on a 7-5 vote. Passed by the Senate Appropriations Committee on May 26, 2011 on a 6-2 vote, and by the full Senate on June 1, 2011 on a 25-14 vote. Passed by the full Assembly on September 8, 2011 on a 53-26 vote.
