Organizational Background

Equality California is the nation’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ) civil rights organization with over 800,000 members. Equality California brings the voices of LGBTQ people and allies to institutions of power in California and across the United States, striving to create a world that is healthy, just, and fully equal for all LGBTQ people. We advance civil rights and social justice by inspiring, advocating, and mobilizing through an inclusive movement that works tirelessly on behalf of those we serve. Through its legislative work, Equality California has successfully sponsored 142 pieces of pro-equality legislation cementing California as the state with strongest LGBTQ-civil rights protections in the country.

Equality California Institute is a 501(c)(3) organization that has a parallel mission statement to Equality California, its 501(c)(4) counterpart. Equality California Institute educates the broader community on important LGBTQ issues such as safe and supportive schools, transgender equality, access to quality affordable healthcare, health and mental health disparities, LGBTQ leadership development, gun safety, immigration, the needs of LGBTQ seniors and the 2020 Census and redistricting. Over the last five years, Equality California Institute has spearheaded successful programs to tackle these issues, including multiple public education campaigns, such as Transform California, Equality4All, #Take It, I’m PrEP’d, Let California Ring, Fair Share for Equality, the Breakthrough Conversations Project, and Health Happens with Equality. Equality California Institute also participates in 8-12 pride celebrations throughout the state each year.

Position Overview

The Communications Manager will support the overall communications strategy and program for Equality California and Equality California Institute. Reporting to the Communications Director, the Communications Manager will work collaboratively to support all aspects of the organization’s communications strategies, with a focus on communications to support the education and advocacy work of Equality California Institute, Spanish-language communications and local issues in the Central Valley and Southern California.

Responsibilities

  1. Serves as a member of Equality California’s communications team and collaborates with the Communications Director, the other Communications Manager and the Program Team to develop communications strategies — with a focus on communications to support the education and advocacy work of Equality California Institute, Spanish-language communications and local issues in the Central Valley and Southern California.
  2. Helps execute strategic communications campaigns to raise the visibility and profile of Equality California Institute’s programs and to increase organizational effectiveness.
  3. Works with the Communications Team and Program Team to create email campaigns for Equality California Institute’s programs, including drafting copy, coding and tracking metrics for communications with campaign email lists.
  4. Develops social media strategies aimed at quickly growing and motivating core audiences and persuading new supporters to join our effort.
  5. Collaborates with the Communications Team, Program Team, consultants and/or vendors to develop and execute digital advertising buys across social media and display platforms.
  6. Monitors trends and changes in the media landscape, social media, and in the larger nonprofit landscape.
  7. Supports the management of media and public relations strategies, including preparing press releases and other materials as well as responding to media requests (print, television, radio, online).
  8. Manages Spanish-language media and public relations strategies, including preparing press releases and other materials as well as responding to media requests (print, television, radio, online).
  9. Represents the organization in public venues and serve as a media representative and organizational spokesperson as required.
  10. Ensures that the content of all media, publicity, and promotional materials adhere to the highest standards of quality and professionalism.
  11. Helps ensure consistency in Equality California and Equality California Institute’s publicity, marketing, branding, and fundraising materials.
  12. Drives the digital storytelling narrative of Equality California Institute’s broad programs by identifying compelling messengers and drafting stories for the website, blog and social media highlighting the need for full LGBTQ equality.
  13. Manages multiple campaigns’ CRM (customer/constituent relationship management) system, including oversight of membership lists, online actions, online fundraising pages and other functions as needed.
  14. Manages the creation and day-to-day maintenance of campaign websites, overseeing consultants.

Qualifications

Applicants for this position should bring the following knowledge, abilities, and attitude:

  1. Fluency and exceptional written and verbal communications skills in both English and Spanish.
  2. At least 2-4 years experience in communications.
  3. Experience interacting with members of the media.
  4. Experience working in a multicultural environment and with diverse communities.
  5. Experience working with Spanish-language media preferred.
  6. Experience working on social media and email marketing campaigns preferred.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to LGBTQ civil rights, diversity, social justice, and social change.
  8. Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with people inside and outside the organization.
  9. Strong administrative skills, including the ability to manage many projects simultaneously and to set priorities.
  10. Ability and interest to work with a wide range of organizations and institutions including other LGBTQ groups, schools, unions, religious congregations, and other social justice and advocacy organizations.
  11. Experience with multiple CRM and website platforms, including BSD Tools and WordPress, preferred.
  12. Ability to work independently, prioritize work and remain flexible on multiple, high-paced campaigns.
  13. Attention to detail.
  14. Strong work ethic and willingness to work occasional nights and weekends as needed.
  15. Willingness to work on nights and weekends as needed and travel occasionally.
  16. Bachelor’s or graduate degree preferred.

Salary will be based on experience and includes competitive benefits (healthcare, dental, vision, long/short term disability, life insurance and 401K). This full time position will be based out of our Los Angeles office and will require a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work time, as well as occasional travel within the Central Valley and Southern California regions.  Applicants will be reimbursed for mileage, but must have a car and be able to drive within the regions.
