Organizational Background:

Equality California (EQCA) is the nation’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) civil rights organization with over 800,000 members. Equality California brings the voices of LGBTQ people and allies to institutions of power in California and across the United States, striving to create a world that is healthy, just, and fully equal for all LGBTQ people. We advance civil rights and social justice by inspiring, advocating, and mobilizing through an inclusive movement that works tirelessly on behalf of those we serve. Through its legislative work, EQCA has successfully sponsored 140 pieces of pro-equality legislation cementing California as the state with strongest LGBTQ-civil rights protections in the country.

Equality California Institute (EQCAI) is a 501(c)3 organization that has a parallel mission to EQCA, its 501(c)4 counterpart. EQCAI educates the broader community on important LGBTQ issues such as transgender equality, violence and hate crimes, healthcare, health disparities, the needs of LGBTQ seniors and youth, homelessness and immigration. Over the last five years, EQCAI has spearheaded successful programs to tackle these issues, including multiple public education campaigns, such as Transform California, Equality4All, #Take It, I’m PrEPed, Let California Ring, Fair Share for Equality, the Breakthrough Conversations Project, and Health Happens with Equality.

Position Overview:

Equality California and Equality California Institute seek a full-time Donor Relations Manager. The Donor Relations Manager is part of a seven-person development department that is responsible for the implementation of fundraising activities including individual major gifts and annual fund, corporate sponsorships, foundation grants, and large-scale event fundraising. This position is ideal for candidates with 3-5 years of experience in development, including direct experience executing individual giving annual fund campaigns, direct donor cultivation and stewardship, and development operations. Additional experience with major gifts and/or event fundraising is preferred. This position will be based in our Los Angeles office and will be supervised by the Director of Development.


I. Individual giving annual fund responsibilities include:

  1. Develop and lead the execution of annual fund strategy for Capitol Club, EQCA’s sustaining donor program for annual gifts between $600-$4,999, including timeline and communication plans for email, direct mail, phone campaigns, and in-person solicitations.
  2. Identify and research prospective donors; update research on existing donors.
  3. Engage in direct 1:1 donor cultivation and asks.
  4. Conceive of and execute individual giving cultivation and stewardship events throughout California.
  5. Provide high level support to Executive Director, Director of Development, and Major Gifts Officer on all individual giving fundraising elements.
  6. Represent EQCA at community events, dinners and lunches during evenings and weekends in order to identify and cultivate prospective donors.
  7. Work with staff and outside consultant to sync strategy for all individual giving campaigns, including major gifts ($5,000+) and grassroots (up to $599) direct mail, telephone and digital.
  8. Write donor correspondence, including newsletters, acknowledgements, emails, and meeting follow up.

II. Major event support:

  1. Work collaboratively with Director of Development and Associate Director of Events and Sponsorships to support planning and execution of 5-6 annual galas, exceeding revenue goals for each event.
  2. Strategize and manage live fundraising ask at all annual galas, with the goal of engaging event attendees as year-round individual.

III. Additional administrative responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  1. Develop a weekly metrics-based dashboard for reporting progress.
  2. Maintain accurate records in the donor database, including pledges, payments and other donor information.
  3. Assist with preparing budgets and provide periodic progress reports to staff directors for each event or project.
  4. Keep track of individual giving finances including check requests, invoicing, collections and reporting.


Applicants for this position should bring the following knowledge, abilities, and attitude:

    1. Bachelor’s degree from accredited university required
    2. 3-5 years individual giving annual fund experience required
    3. Experience working with non-profits or political organizations preferred
    4. Extreme attention to detail as well as time management and multi-tasking ability
    5. Experience with budget management strongly preferred
    6. Excellent written and verbal communication skills
    7. Excellent interpersonal skills with a high degree of professionalism
    8. Proficiency in MS Office and/or G Suite (Google) programs is required
    9. Experience working with Salesforce a plus
    10. Ability to prioritize and handle variety of projects simultaneously
    11. Passion and commitment to addressing issues impacting the LGBT community as well as advancing equality and social justice generally
    12. Commitment to working across lines of difference including race, class, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and age
    13. Ability to work effectively both individually and in a team in a fast-paced environment
    14. Sense of humor and self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit are a plus

Salary will be based on experience and includes competitive benefits (healthcare, dental, vision, long/short term disability, life insurance and 401K). This full time position will be based out of Los Angeles and will require a flexible schedule including evening and weekend work time, as well as regular travel across California. Applicants will be reimbursed for mileage, but must have a reliable car and be able to drive in California.
