LOS ANGELES — Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ civil rights organization, announced the endorsements of 17 pro-equality candidates running for state and local office this year. The candidates include a number of openly LGBTQ Californians seeking public office across the state — part of a surge of LGBTQ candidates running throughout the country this year.
“Our state and local elected officials are on the front lines of the fight for LGBTQ civil rights and social justice, and we’re excited to be supporting such an outstanding group of candidates this year,” said Equality California Executive Director Rick Zbur. “With a record number of openly LGBTQ Californians running for office this November, we can’t wait to be a part of the ‘rainbow wave’ across the nation.”

Equality California has endorsed the following candidates in their respective races:

  • Sonia Aery for California Assembly, District 3*
  • Melissa Hurtado for California Senate, District 14
  • Marggie Castellano for California Senate, District 36
  • Phil Kim for San Francisco Board of Education*
  • Mia Satya for San Francisco Board of Education*
  • Anthony Duarte for Hacienda La Puente Unified School District*
  • Vivian Romero for Montebello City Council*
  • John Gallegos-Cordero for Rancho Cucamonga City Council*
  • Gabe Quinto for Mayor of El Cerrito*
  • Joe Mosca for Encinitas City Council*
  • Denise Davis for Redlands City Council*
  • Marlo Rodriguez for Oakland City Council, District 6*
  • Shawn Kumagai for Dublin City Council*
  • Dina Pielaet* and AJ Valenzuela* for Ventura County Community College Board of Trustees, Area 1 (Dual endorsement)
  • Laura Parmer-Lohan for San Carlos City Council*
  • Alexandria Brown for Chico City Council*
