Position: Mentor (Central Valley)

Reports to: Program Manager

Service Dates: July 1, 2020 – June 1, 2021

Closing date of this position: Open until filled

Organizational Background

Equality California is the nation’s largest statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ+) civil rights organization with over 800,000 members. Equality California brings the voices of LGBTQ+ people and allies to institutions of power in California and across the United States, striving to create a world that is healthy, just, and fully equal for all LGBTQ+ people. We advance civil rights and social justice by inspiring, advocating, and mobilizing through an inclusive movement that works tirelessly on behalf of those we serve.

Position Overview

Starting in Fall 2020, the Equality California Institute — the non-profit, educational arm of Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization — program will be the first AmeriCorps program in the country to focus on supporting LGBTQ+ youth. Equality California Institute AmeriCorps members will mentor LGBTQ+ students in the Central Valley, supporting students’ social, emotional and academic well-being, leading afterschool programs and planning service events designed to improve school climate.

Requirements

  • Be at least 18 years or older (by July, 1 2020).
  • Have a college degree (A.A., B.A./B.S., M.A./M.S., etc.).
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident. Unfortunately, applicants who have received Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.
  • Able to commit to completing 1700 hours of full-time service over 11 months (June 2020 – May 2021).
  • Has served no more than three terms in an AmeriCorps state or national program.
  • Because the safety of students is our priority, every confirmed AmeriCorps member must undergo a criminal history check. In cases where a criminal offense appears, the circumstances will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

We strongly encourage diverse candidates to apply, including, but not limited to, women, people of color, people of diverse gender identities, and non-LGBTQ allies.
