Washington, D.C.–In response to today’s 45-55 Senate vote failing to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Equality California Executive Director Rick Zbur issued the following statement:
“For the second time in two days, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), has failed in his efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. By a considerably wider margin than yesterday’s “motion to proceed,” seven Republican Senators joined every Senate Democrat to defeat a proposal to repeal the ACA with deadline of crafting a replacement within two years.
Equality California is fighting to protect healthcare for millions of LGBTQ Americans and tens of millions of others, including from efforts to strip funding from Planned Parenthood–a vital resource for LGBTQ people who seek services related to cancer, pregnancy, STIs and HIV.
Another ACA vote is expected tomorrow. All Democrats and a handful of key GOP senators are understandably wary of undermining healthcare, an area that affects one-sixth of the U.S. economy, and of ripping healthcare coverage away from millions. Equality California will continue to mobilize our members in key states to call their senators and urge a ‘no’ vote on these attempts to repeal and undermine the ACA.
