A federal judge in Texas has blocked a presidential directive on bathroom rights for transgender students in U.S. public schools.
Judge Reed O’Connor in Fort Worth issued the temporary injunction Sunday. Texas and 12 other states asked for the action after the federal government told public schools in May that transgender students must be allowed to use bathrooms consistent with their chosen gender identity. Jo Michael, Legislative Manager for Equality California calls the lawsuit an attack on transgender people and not in accordance with American values.
“It’s very much out of step with Californian values and with the law that is already in place here in our state.”
Michael says that the ruling does not change the law that is already in affect in California. Or the policies on the books in other states.
“Transgender students will continue to have the same rights that they had before the guidance by the Obama administration was issued.”
The injunction came days after the Justice Department sued North Carolina over a state law that requires people to use public bathrooms that correspond with the gender on their birth certificates. U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch had likened that law to policies of racial segregation. Supporters have argued such laws are commonsense privacy safeguards.
