WASHINGTON, D.C. — Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, released the following statement from Executive Director Tony Hoang in response to the U.S. Department of Education’s determination that existing California policies, including the SAFETY Act, violate federal law.
“Equality California condemns the Trump administration’s latest attempt to bully California schools and target transgender students. California law is explicit that the SAFETY ACT does not override federal law, and the state remains in full compliance with FERPA. Parents continue to have full access to their children’s educational records. This is not about transparency or parental rights. It is part of a broader, deliberate campaign to attack transgender young people and undermine their ability to learn and thrive in school. Equality California will continue to defend California’s students, families, and educators from politically motivated efforts to roll back civil rights and endanger vulnerable youth.”
