OAKLAND, Calif. —  Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, has announced a dual endorsement of Mia Bonta and Janani Ramachandran in the race for Assembly District 18. The special primary election to replace now-Attorney General Rob Bonta will take place on June 29, 2021 and the general election, if necessary, will be held on August 21, 2021.

Equality California released the following statement from Executive Director-designate Tony Hoang:

“Voters in Assembly District 18 have incredible, pro-equality choices to fill the shoes of their former Assemblymember, Attorney General Rob Bonta.

“As a mother of three and president of the Alameda USD School Board, Mia Bonta is an ally and a champion for LGBTQ+ and all students. We know that Mia will fight for LGBTQ+ civil rights and social justice in our schools, in our criminal justice system, in healthcare and every other aspect of life, which is why we are proud to dual-endorse her campaign for Assembly District 18.

“Janani Ramachandran is the daughter of Indian Immigrants and understands that equality and opportunity are cornerstone California values. A tireless advocate for a more just and equal legal system, Janani would make history as California’s first South Asian Assemblywoman and add to the ranks of the California Legislative LGBTQ Caucus. We are proud to dual-endorse her bid to represent Assembly District 18.”

Mia Bonta is the president of the Alameda Unified School District School Board and CEO of Oakland Promise, a cradle-to-college and career preparation initiative across Oakland Public Schools.
