WASHINGTON, D.C. —  Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, released the following statement from Executive Director Tony Hoang in response to the Biden administration’s comments on healthcare for transgender youth:

“We are disappointed and disheartened by the statement released by the Biden administration opposing the full continuum of care for transgender youth. This statement contradicts the President’s broad support and actions favoring transgender people, including transgender youth.

An overwhelming majority of medical experts, including every major medical association in the US, representing over 1.3 million doctors, agree that transgender youth should have access to comprehensive healthcare.

Medical decisions for transgender youth belong between their family, and their healthcare provider. These are private medical decisions that should be free from government interference.

At a time when far-right extreme officials continue to push hateful anti-transgender legislation and rhetoric, the President needs to reaffirm his commitment to LGBTQ+ youth and their families. Equality California will continue holding the Biden administration accountable for their commitment to protecting life-saving healthcare for transgender people.”
