OCEANSIDE, Calif. — San Diego and Orange County voters have a clear choice on November 8th: pro-equality champion Congressman Mike Levin or anti-LGBTQ+ extremist Brian Maryott. Throughout his career, Maryott has repeatedly aligned himself with far-right hate groups and promoted dangerous attacks against the LGBTQ+ community. That’s why Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, and other LGBTQ+ civil rights organizations have unanimously endorsed Levin for re-election.

Recent examples of Marryott’s dangerous anti-LGBTQ+ actions include:

  • Earlier this year, Maryott signed a pledge stating his opposition to marriage equality. He also signed the pledge in 2020.

  • In an interview with far-right podcast host Robert Shillman in May, Maryott said that trans people are a “tragic fad,” among other anti-LGBTQ comments.

  • Maryott has accepted $11,400 in contributions from Shillman, who has “an extensive track record of financing anti-Muslim hate groups and extremists.”

  • Last month, Maryott took $2,500 from Save America Now, a local California anti-LGBTQ, anti-abortion PAC that believes the Equality Act is “the single greatest assault on religious liberty this country has ever faced.”

  • And just this week, an anti-LGBTQ group that promotes “God’s design for human sexuality and gender” released their endorsement of Maryott.

“No matter how hard Brian Maryott may try, he cannot run from his dangerous anti-LGBTQ+ record,” said Equality California Managing Director of External Affairs Samuel Garrett-Pate. “Maryott has repeatedly stood against the LGBTQ+ community, attacking trans kids and opposing basic legal protections against discrimination. These aren’t the values of San Diego and Orange County voters. We can’t trust Brian Maryott to deliver the common-sense solutions our communities need, when his focus seems to be dividing our communities and promoting hateful extremism. Congressman Mike Levin has always stood with the LGBTQ+ community, and we’re proud to support his campaign for re-election on November 8.
