LOS ANGELES – Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ civil rights organization released the following statement on behalf of Executive Director Rick Zbur following David Vela’s appointment to the LA Community College District Board of Trustees in a unanimous vote — making Vela the first openly gay man to serve on the board:
“It’s hard to imagine a more qualified candidate than our friend David Vela to succeed Asm. Sydney Kamlager on the LA Community College District Board, and Equality California is proud to congratulate David on his unanimous appointment — and on breaking an important glass ceiling as the first gay or lesbian trustee. Throughout his career, David has fought to make sure every member of his community has a shot at the American Dream — and we’re excited to see him continue that fight in this new role. It’s important for members of all underrepresented communities to have the opportunity to serve in office — and as role models for our young people. Los Angeles’s LGBTQ community college students and faculty in Los Angeles will benefit greatly from David’s critical representation on the Board.”
