SACRAMENTO — Following the announcement that California Governor Jerry Brown’s longtime senior advisor Nancy McFadden passed away this morning after a long battle with ovarian cancer, Equality California released the following statement from Executive Director Rick Zbur:

“This morning the State and the people of California lost one of our angels. Nancy McFadden was a true and dedicated champion for our LGBTQ community, for women and for all Californians. She was a formidable force for good — one who stopped at nothing to push the moral arc of the Golden State toward justice. Most of all though, Nancy was as loyal and fierce an ally as our community could have possibly hoped for. The lives of LGBTQ children, of transgender women who face violence on our streets and in our communities and of all LGBTQ people were made better because of the key role Nancy played advocating for us within California’s government and business community.

“Our sincere condolences go out to Governor Brown and the First Lady and to everyone who knew and loved Nancy. May she rest in power.”

On March 7, 2016, Equality California honored Nancy McFadden, a longtime champion for LGBTQ civil rights and social justice in California and at the federal level, with the organization’s Ally Leadership Award. Throughout her service in the Governor’s office, McFadden played an instrumental role in the success of Equality California’s legislative priorities. Prior to joining the Brown Administration, McFadden was an active opponent of Proposition 8, helping to steward PG&E’s political clout toward defeating the effort to rip away the freedom to marry from California same-sex couples.
