“We are glad the Republicans have taken this important first step towards recognizing LGBT people within their own Party,” said Rick Zbur, executive director of Equality California. “In 2014 we saw additional signs of progress as both Assemblymember Brian Mainschein (77th Assembly District) and Senator Anthony Cannella (12th Senate District) each scored 100% on the Equality California Legislative scorecard, which rates legislators on their votes on pro-LGBT legislation. However, with other members of the Republican Party using antiquated, offensive terms like “gay lifestyle and agenda” to describe their party’s embrace of LGBT people, clearly we must continue educating about equality across California and beyond. We’ve also seen Republican candidates continue to use our community as a wedge issue in campaigns just last year so our work at EQCA is far from over.”
