SACRAMENTO — Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, has endorsed Assemblymember Sydney Kamlager in Senate District 30. The special election to replace Los Angeles County Supervisor Holly Mitchell, who previously held the seat and has also endorsed Kamlager, will be held on March 2 and a runoff, if necessary, will be held on May 4.
“Sydney Kamlager is one of the LGBTQ+ community’s greatest champions in Sacramento, and we need her strong pro-equality voice in the Senate,” said Equality California Executive Director Rick Chavez Zbur. “The fight for civil rights and social justice for LGBTQ+ people and people living with HIV is personal to Sydney, as she works tirelessly to honor her openly LGBTQ+ uncle who passed away during the AIDS crisis. In Sacramento, Sydney has gone to bat for critical, pro-equality legislation time and time again — and we look forward to working alongside her in the Senate when she wins on March 2.”
Asm. Sydney Kamlager represents Assembly District 54 in Los Angeles County. Prior to her election to the Assembly, Sydney was a member of the L.A. Community College District Board of Trustees and served as District Director of the 30th Senate District under Holly J. Mitchell. In the Assembly, Asm. Kamlager has fought to pass a COVID-19 eviction moratorium, increase equity in our criminal justice system and remove cost as a barrier to reproductive healthcare. Asm. Kamlager was a crucial voice on legislation to end discrimination against LGBTQ+ people on California’s sex offender registry.
“I am grateful to Equality California for their endorsement of my campaign,” said Sydney Kamlager. “As a proud, lifelong ally to the LGBTQ+ community, I am dedicated to advancing racial, social, and economic justice and will continue to support legislation that directly translates to better outcomes for LGBTQ Californians. I look forward to a continued partnership with Equality California.”
Sydney Kamlager has been endorsed by Congresswoman Karen Bass, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, California Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber, Supervisor Holly Mitchell, Senator Scott Wiener, Dolores Huerta, Patrisse Cullors, the California Democratic Party, Stonewall Democratic Club, Planned Parenthood Los Angeles County Advocacy Fund and many other progressive leaders and organizations.
