SAN FERNANDO VALLEY, Calif. — Out LGBTQ+ Marine Corps veteran Caroline Menjivar won her race for California’s 20th Senate District, declaring victory on Veteran’s Day. When she is sworn in on December 5th, Menjivar will be part of California’s largest Legislative LGBTQ Caucus ever — and the first state legislature in the nation to reach 10% LGBTQ+ representation.

Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, dual-endorsed Menjivar and her openly LGBTQ+ opponent Daniel Hertzberg. The organization released the following statement Monday from Executive Director Tony Hoang:

“Caroline knows firsthand the challenges that women, working families and LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities face each day. Throughout her career — as a Marine, an EMT and an advocate in City Hall — she has been a tireless champion for LGBTQ+ youth and at-risk communities, and she will continue to be a fighting for the most vulnerable members of our Valley communities as our next State Senator. We look forward to working with Caroline to create a world that is healthy, just and fully equal for all LGBTQ+ people.

“We also thank Daniel Hertzberg for running a strong campaign. Equality California was proud to endorse both candidates as they made history as the first two openly LGBTQ+ candidates running to represent the communities of Senate District 20.”

Menjivar is a veteran of the Marine Corps and a licensed EMT. She studied sociology and earned a Bachelor of Arts from California State University, Northridge. She went on to earn a Master of Social Welfare at UCLA and worked in the Los Angeles Mayor’s Gender Equity Office. She serves on the GLSEN Los Angeles Chapter Board and The Help Group’s Kaleidoscope Advisory Board. She lives in Panorama City with her wife.

Equality California is the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ civil rights organization.
