SAN FRANCISCO — Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, congratulated Senator Scott Wiener (D-San Francisco) for emerging victorious in the primary election for Senate District 11 on Tuesday night. The organization endorsed Senator Wiener, who serves as chair of California’s Legislative LGBTQ Caucus and has authored groundbreaking legislation sponsored by Equality California to advance LGBTQ+ civil rights and combat the HIV epidemic during his first term. In 2016, Equality California spent more than $2 million in support of Wiener’s campaign and views the senator’s re-election this year as a top priority for the LGBTQ+ community.

Equality California released the following statement from Executive Director Rick Chavez Zbur:

“We are thrilled for Senator Wiener and excited to see that San Franciscans overwhelmingly support sending him back to Sacramento for a second term in the senate. Voters in Senate District 11 clearly know what we do: that Scott Wiener is a bold, fearless champion for civil rights and social justice. From addressing our housing crisis to ending the HIV epidemic and reforming our broken criminal justice system, Senator Wiener is never afraid to tackle our state’s most pressing issues. We look forward to congratulating him again in November.”
