SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, released the following statement from Executive Director Tony Hoang following Assembly and Senate passage of SB 339 by Senator Scott Wiener which further expands access to PrEP, specifically the ability of pharmacists to furnish the medication without a doctor’s prescription:

“More than 40 years after the first HIV/AIDS diagnoses, our ability to mitigate and prevent new infections is stronger than ever, particularly with the advent of PrEP — medication that has greatly reduced HIV/AIDS transmissions and become one of the strongest tools in preventing new cases. SB 339 by Senator Wiener will not only allow pharmacists to continue dispensing PrEP without a doctor’s prescription — helping to decrease health disparities in already marginalized communities — it also increases the amount of the drug that can be dispensed at any one time, and ensures that health plans will reimburse pharmacists for furthering access to these urgently needed medications.

We are thankful to Senator Wiener and the Legislative LGBTQ Caucus for championing this bill, and for working diligently to remove harmful amendments inserted last year that would have significantly undermined PrEP access in California. We encourage Governor Newsom to sign this essential healthcare legislation when it comes to his desk.”
