WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the U.S. Supreme Court issued an emergency order lifting a temporary restraining order that had prohibited federal agencies—including ICE—from conducting immigration stops in Southern California based solely on race, language, occupation, or location. Equality California released the following statement from Executive Director Tony Hoang in response:
“No one should fear harassment or detention simply because of how they look, the language they speak, or where they work. By stripping away protections against racial profiling, the Supreme Court has undermined the fundamental promise of equal protection under the law and put countless people in danger. To echo the dissent written by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, we cannot afford to stand idly by while our constitutional freedoms are lost. California is home to millions of immigrants, including LGBTQ+ immigrants, who contribute to our economy, culture and civic life every single day. They deserve to be treated with dignity and humanity—not targeted like criminals in their own neighborhoods. We stand in solidarity with immigrant communities across California and will continue working alongside our partners to fight back through the courts, the legislature, and community action. Equality California will not rest until every person — regardless of race, language, immigration status, or sexual orientation and gender identity — can live safely, openly, and free from fear.”
