LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Today Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, announced an early endorsement of Senator Alex Padilla’s campaign for the United States Senate in 2022.

Last week, Senator Padilla launched his 2022 election campaign with broad support from across the state including nearly all of the California Congressional Delegation, all California statewide officials and California’s big city mayors.

“I’ve worked closely with Equality California throughout my career and I am proud to be an ally in the fight for LGBTQ+ civil rights and social justice,” said Sen. Padilla. “As California’s Secretary of State, I partnered with EQCA on a first-of-its-kind initiative to protect transgender and gender non-conforming voters’ access to the ballot box and to boost LGBTQ+ civic engagement. I look forward to continuing our partnership to create a safe, inclusive, and just nation for all.”

“Californians deserve a champion in the US Senate who will fight for immigrant rights, worker’s rights, voting rights, racial justice and LGBTQ+ civil rights — Alex Padilla is that champion,” said Equality California Executive Director Rick Chavez Zbur. “Whether it’s creating a pathway to citizenship, fighting for the Equality Act or protecting transgender Californians at the polls, Senator Padilla has never shied away from fighting for our progressive values, and he has the track record to prove it. Senator Padilla isn’t just a passive supporter of LGBTQ+ civil rights and social justice, but a full-throated champion who takes on our struggle for full, lived equality as their own. We could not be prouder to support Alex Padilla for US Senate.”

Sen. Padilla was appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom to fill the Senate seat vacated by Vice President Kamala Harris for the remainder of her term. He is up for reelection in 2022.
