WASHINGTON — The U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee wrapped up hearings today on the nomination of U.S. Circuit Court Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson to serve a lifetime appointment as Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court. Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, released the following statement from Executive Director Tony Hoang:
“Over the last four days, Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson has demonstrated exactly why President Biden nominated her to serve a lifetime appointment on the U.S. Supreme Court — the first Black woman in history to ascend to nation’s highest court. Responding to Senators’ questions that ranged from appropriate and insightful to absurd and offensive, Judge Jackson exhibited knowledge, experience, demeanor and patience that have served her well on the bench and will make her an exceptional Supreme Court Justice. “Beyond her exceptional credentials and her reputation as a fair and highly qualified jurist, Judge Jackson also demonstrated the power of representation. Her unique life experience and perspective will strengthen the Court and enhance its credibility at a critical moment in our nation’s history. And the Judge’s presence on the high bench will inspire generations of Americans — including young Black girls like her daughter Leila — to persevere. “The United States Supreme Court needs Judge Jackson. We urge the Senate Judiciary Committee and the United States Senate to confirm her swiftly and without delay.”
