WASHINGTON — On Sunday, the New York Times published a report detailing the Trump-Pence Administration’s “effort to establish a legal definition of sex under Title IX” that would “narrowly [define] gender as a biological, immutable condition determined by genitalia at birth” and allow for widespread government-sanctioned discrimination against transgender and gender nonconforming Americans. Equality California, the nation’s largest statewide LGBTQ civil rights organization, released the following statement from Executive Director Rick Zbur in response to the Times report:

“The Trump-Pence Administration’s heartless, coordinated attempts to erase the existence of transgender Americans illustrates just how low they’re willing to go for their radical political base. Seemingly not content with their attacks on transgender students and service members, the Administration has launched a full-scale war against millions of transgender and gender nonconforming people across our nation by proposing sweeping new regulations across our government that would require discrimination. But rest assured, medicine, science and the law are all on our side — not the Administration’s — and so are Californians, a majority of whom want our government to do more — not less — to support and protect our transgender family members, friends, coworkers and neighbors.

“As we’ve said before — and demonstrated in the courts and at the ballot box — we’re not going anywhere. The LGBTQ community and our allies stand united in defense of one another. We are strong and resilient. And we will stand together to defeat the Trump-Pence Administration’s agenda of hate and fear.”

Equality California is a plaintiff in Stockman v. Trump, one of four lawsuits to successfully block the implementation of the Trump-Pence Administration’s transgender military ban through a nationwide preliminary injunction.

Equality California’s top federal legislative priority continues to be the Equality Act, which would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to include sex, sexual orientation and gender identity among the prohibited categories of discrimination or segregation.
